Grangärde church is believed to have been built in the later half of the 15th century. On 1st of July 1716 lightning struck the church and the tower, roof and benches were destroyed and the bells melted. In October the same year king Karl XII granted nationwide collections to be made in order to rebuild the church. Fairly soon the church was partially built up so it could be used. The high sceptre was however never rebuilt and the tower was covered in a flat wooden roof. New bells were also made for the church.

The church has from 1834 principally looked the same. It was then the tower was built. The church has since then been restored a couple of times. The last restoration was made between 1937 and 1938.
